University of Houston celebrates first-ever medical graduates

Graduation day is a major milestone in the academic journey, marking the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. This was particularly true for 22 students at the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine who crossed the commencement stage on Saturday, May 11. They were the first students ever to earn a medical degree from the University of Houston.

Three years after its establishment, the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) at the Andy and Barbara Gessner College of Nursing is celebrating its inaugural class of graduates. The DNP doctorate equips family nurse practitioners and nurse executives to tackle the scarcity of primary care providers, nursing educators, and leaders in a complex health care environment. The program elevates the level of preparation necessary for advanced nursing practice from a master’s degree to a doctorate.

Researchers at the University of Houston College of Pharmacy have discovered that when there's a higher amount of a protein called AKAP12 inside the heart, it speeds up the work of an enzyme called PDE8A and can accelerate cardiac dysfunction.

HISD Student Artists Win Second Annual Truck Art Contest, Artwork Displayed on City Trucks

On May 7, the City of Houston presented four Solid Waste Management vehicles featuring artwork from four HISD students. These students were the winners of the second annual Truck Art Contest, a collaboration between HISD’s Energy and Sustainability Department and the City of Houston’s Solid Waste Management Department aimed at raising awareness about recycling and waste diversion among the city’s youth.
