Pradeep Sharma, a 20-year faculty member at the University of Houston, has been named the next dean of the Cullen College of Engineering. Sharma, who is currently serving as interim dean, will officially assume leadership on Monday, July 1.

Sharma, Hugh Roy and Lillie Cranz Cullen Distinguished University Professor, expressed his enthusiasm for his new role. "It is an honor to be named the dean of the Cullen College of Engineering," he said. "Since my arrival here, I have cared deeply about the success of this college. Now, I can play a greater role in its future by working alongside faculty, students and other stakeholders and make us a destination college for engineering and technology."

Sharma joined the college’s faculty in 2004 and previously served as chair of the mechanical engineering department for 12 years. His research in flexoelectricity has been widely published and has influenced further studies in healthcare and robotics applications.

His academic contributions have earned him several prestigious honors, including membership in the National Academy of Engineering, the Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences’ Cozzarelli Prize, and the Daniel C. Drucker Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

UH Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Diane Z. Chase praised Sharma's appointment: “His vision and leadership will be instrumental in guiding the Cullen College of Engineering to even greater heights. He is committed to building upon the college’s strong foundation and further advancing its reputation for excellence in research, education and innovation.”

Sharma succeeds Joseph W. Tedesco, who served as dean for 16 years before stepping down in 2023.

Founded in 1941, the Cullen College of Engineering offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees across various industries. In 2023, it expanded its academic offerings with a new Technology Division and has developed partnerships with industry leaders to enhance student success.

"I am grateful for this opportunity and look forward to elevating the reputation of the Cullen College of Engineering,” Sharma stated. “It is important that others recognize its global impact, and I will work diligently to spotlight the work of our faculty, staff and alumni.”
