On Aug. 23, Needville Little League (NLL) secured its spot in the U.S. Championship Game of the 2023 Little League World Series (LLWS) by outlasting the team from Seattle in nine innings to win 1-0. The U.S. Championship Game is scheduled for Aug. 26 at 2:30 p.m.

Gonzalez says injured deputy in good spirits during hospital visit

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in an Aug. 21 Twitter post that he visited injured deputy Joseph Anderson in the hospital and the latter is doing well. The suspect accused of shooting Anderson was captured following a five-hour standoff at a Silhouette Ridge residence.


UH men's hoops mourns loss of ex-player Chaney

The University of Houston (UH) Cougar’s men’s basketball program is mourning the loss of former player Reggie Cheney, who passed away on Aug. 21 at the age of 23. Chaney, who recently graduated from the university, last suited up for head coach Kelvin Sampson during the 2022-2023 season.


Astros' Altuve collects 2,000th career hit

During the Houston Astros’ 10-3 home loss to the Seattle Mariners on Aug. 19, there was a cause for celebration in the fifth inning when veteran infielder Jose Altuve collected his 2,000th career hit. Altuve is now the third player in franchise history to reach the milestone.

On Aug. 17, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced $984 million in annual state funding for its hospitals. According to a press release from the Governor's Office, the funding was secured by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC).

The University of Houston’s (UH) Board of Visitors has added 22 new members, with their terms slated to begin in the upcoming fall semester. Each member was appointed to the board by Dr. Renu Khator, the chancellor of the UH System and president of the flagship institution, and is tasked with serving as an advisor giving insights to promote the school’s brand and reputation.

Joe Biden (D) hosted the 2022 World Series champion Houston Astros in the East Room at the White House on Aug. 8, marking the second time in half a decade the team called on 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. The Astros made a quick stop in Washington, D.C. after beating the New York Yankees 9-7 at Yankee Stadium on Aug. 6 and a day before they commence their three-game series against the American League (AL)-best Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
