Governor Greg Abbott has congratulated the City of Bowie for being designated as a Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community by Travel Texas. This recognition marks the inaugural year of the program, following Bowie's completion of a multi-step certification process. The designation highlights Bowie Community Development's efforts to use tourism as an economic growth strategy, aiming to create local jobs and attract more visitors both nationally and internationally.

Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of tourism to Texas' economy, stating, "Tourism is critical to both our local and state economies, supporting one in 11 jobs across Texas." He added that travelers generate over $193.8 billion annually in economic impact and support 1.3 million jobs statewide. Abbott encouraged other communities in Texas to apply for this certification to enhance local tourism and job creation.

Travel Texas Director Tim Fennell praised Bowie's unique offerings: "In Bowie, the frontier spirit is alive and well, offering visitors a mix of history, outdoor recreation, and community pride." He noted that earning this designation reinforces Bowie's role in preserving its heritage while inviting travelers to explore its attractions.

Senator Brent Hagenbuch joined in congratulating Bowie on this achievement: "This designation positions Bowie to build upon its infrastructure, attract more visitors, and boost the local economy." Representative David Spiller also expressed his congratulations: "Bowie is an outstanding community, and this designation will only enhance their city’s unique charm and economic growth."

Cindy Roller from Bowie Community Development highlighted how tourism supports their community daily with attractions like the World’s Largest Bowie Knife. She expressed gratitude towards Governor Abbott's office for creating avenues connecting communities through programs like Film Friendly Texas certification.

Jamie Rodden from Bowie Community Development Board announced plans for their upcoming 30th Annual Chicken and Bread Days Heritage Festival. The event will feature various activities celebrating Bowie's history such as a fiddling competition and auto club show.

The Tourism Friendly Texas Community program invites local governments or non-profit organizations leading tourism promotion efforts to apply for certification. Benefits include strengthening relationships important for tourism development and educating leaders on its significance.
