The organizers of the event "These Boots Are Made for Mahjing" have announced that it successfully raised over $20,000 for inflammatory breast cancer research. The funds were collected in honor of Alessandra Land.
According to a press release dated November 6, the inaugural event was hosted by Land's sister, Arabella Hibbert, who is also the owner and founder of Marchesa Mahjong. The event took place on what would have been Land's 43rd birthday. The MD Anderson Cancer Center Boot Walk will be the beneficiary of the funds raised.
Hibbert described "These Boots Are Made for Mahjing" as "an emotional and meaningful celebration" of her sister’s life and legacy. She said, "I can’t think of a better way to celebrate my sister’s birthday and honor her memory." Hibbert expressed her gratitude towards everyone who supported the cause, saying she was "overwhelmed with gratitude."
Hibbert specifically thanked several individuals for their contributions to making the event possible, including Stephanie Cobb; Dr. Wendy Woodward, Chair ad interim of the Department of Breast Radiation Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center; Rebecca Adler; and Kimi Minor.
The press release also mentioned that plans are underway for a second annual "These Boots Are Made for Mahjing."
