The Houston-based nonprofit organization, Tony's Place, which serves the LGBTQ+ community, has been awarded a grant of $21,520. The funds are earmarked for its Emergency Housing Program for LGBTQ+ youth and have been provided by Health Care Advocates International (HCAI). Tony's Place is one of four organizations to receive funding in the recent HCAI Fund grant cycle.
In a joint press release by Tony's Place and HCAI, it was clarified that the primary goal of the Tony’s Place Emergency Housing Program is to provide sustainable housing solutions for its members. The organization aims to address immediate needs of those facing homelessness or housing instability while simultaneously establishing connections for long-term housing solutions.
"Tony’s Place stood out to our review committee because their Emergency Housing Program is providing life-saving critical support to young people in crisis," said Pattie McKnight, HCAI executive director. "Tony’s Place is truly making an immediate impact and lasting difference in the lives of LGBTQ+ youth and young adults in their community."
The press release also noted that since its establishment in 2017, HCAI has contributed over $2 million. The HCAI Fund was inaugurated in 2023 with a clear mission: to offer financial support to 501(c)(3) organizations dedicated to enhancing, serving, and advocating for the LGBTQ+ community. Applications addressing fundamental needs, fostering safety and wellness, combating stigma and discrimination, and promoting equality and education through programs and services are all considered.
Founded in 2016, Tony’s Place honors the memory of Robert Anthony "Tony" Carroll, a figure in the Houston community who advocated for LGBTQ+ causes.
The press release concluded by stating that the HCAI Fund is currently accepting applications for its third grant cycle until March 31, 2024.
