WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congressman Troy E. Nehls (R-TX-22) has introduced the No Taxpayer Funds for Illegal Immigrant Identity Cards Act. This legislation aims to prevent President Joe Biden’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) from using American tax dollars to issue identity cards to illegal immigrants. Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) introduced a similar version of this legislation in the Senate earlier this week.
This summer, the DHS under President Biden is expected to initiate the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Secure Docket Card program. The program plans to distribute photo identity cards to thousands of illegal immigrants across the country, funded directly by American taxpayer dollars. Critics argue that issuing photo identity cards will enable these individuals to exploit American resources and misuse local, state, and federal government benefits such as housing, healthcare, and transportation.
The proposed legislation also seeks to prohibit the use of documentation issued in connection with immigration proceedings as a means to establish eligibility for federal public benefits.
“Upon taking office, Joe Biden dismantled successful Trump-era policies, sending a message around the world that our border is wide-open, encouraging over 9 million illegal aliens to cross our borders,” Congressman Nehls stated. “If this wasn’t bad enough, his DHS is going to hand out IDs to illegal aliens instead of addressing the crisis he created—all at the expense of the American taxpayer. This is unacceptable. Joe Biden should be deporting illegal aliens, not giving them a way to further take advantage of the American people.”
Original cosponsors of this legislation include Congressman Byron Donalds (R-FL-19).
