Governor Greg Abbott has ordered the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to activate state emergency response resources in anticipation of heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding in the Panhandle region through the end of the week.

"With heavy rainfall expected to hit the Panhandle this week, the State of Texas stands ready to deploy all resources needed in preparation for potential flooding,” said Governor Abbott. "Texans are urged to heed the guidance from state and local officials and monitor local forecasts to avoid driving into flooded areas. Remember: Turn Around, Don't Drown.”

The National Weather Service has forecasted thunderstorms that could result in flash flooding across Northwest Texas as the weekend approaches. Residents are encouraged to stay updated on weather conditions.

In response, several state agencies have been mobilized:

- The Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (Texas A&M Task Force 1) will provide swiftwater rescue boat squads for flood rescues.

- The Texas A&M Forest Service (Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System) is deploying strike teams with personnel and fire engines.

- The Texas Department of State Health Services (Texas Emergency Medical Task Force) is preparing severe weather support packages including medics, ambulances, and all-terrain vehicles.

- The Texas Department of Transportation will have personnel monitoring road conditions.

- The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is sending game wardens, rescue boat teams, and helicopters equipped with hoist capabilities.

- The Texas Department of Public Safety will provide helicopters with hoist capabilities, Highway Patrol Troopers, and Tactical Marine Unit support.

- The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will deploy disaster assessment and recovery agents as well as county extension agents for agricultural and livestock needs.

- The Public Utility Commission of Texas will monitor power outages and coordinate with utility providers.

- The Railroad Commission of Texas will oversee natural gas supply monitoring and maintain communication with oil and gas industry representatives.

- The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality will conduct air, water, and wastewater monitoring.

This action comes as ongoing efforts continue to address recovery from recent flooding events across other parts of the state.
