A Louisiana man, Kentrell Obrien Brumfield, has been sentenced to life in prison for a heinous crime that resulted in the death of a young woman during a double shooting incident. Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg expressed the severity of the situation by stating, “Our office takes all allegations of domestic violence so seriously because we see, far too often, that it escalates to murder. And, sometimes, like in this horribly unfair and tragic case, a completely innocent bystander loses their life.”

The tragic event occurred when Brumfield broke into his ex-girlfriend's apartment in north Harris County and opened fire while the two women were having dinner. The shooting resulted in the death of the ex-girlfriend's neighbor, 23-year-old Brittani Simmons, a mother of one. Brumfield also seriously injured his ex-girlfriend during the incident.

Brumfield, who had a history of violence with previous convictions for domestic violence and home invasion in Louisiana, was swiftly convicted of murder by a Harris County jury after just 16 minutes of deliberations. Assistant District Attorney Lara Hogue, who prosecuted the case alongside ADA John Hyde, emphasized the senselessness of the crime, stating, “This was such a senseless crime—neither of these women deserved to be shot—Brittani was just an innocent neighbor who was over for dinner.”

The judge sentenced Brumfield to life in prison, ensuring that he will no longer pose a threat to any community. This tragic incident serves as a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic violence and the importance of swift justice in such cases.
