The likelihood of inclement weather has prompted the city of Houston to cancel its a grand parade for Veterans Day on November 11. Instead, the city said in a Nov. 9 press release, the ceremony preceding the parade will move to the Legacy Room inside City Hall at 901 Bagby St.

"While the parade was open to everyone and all were encouraged to line the designated parade route, the indoor event is limited to invited guests, participants, and media only", said the release.

According to this same source, it is still possible for people to livestream this event on Houston Municipal Television’s website or Facebook page or watch it on the terrestrial channel starting at 10 a.m. "The ceremony will feature keynote speaker Dr. Quindola Crowley, Lt. Colonel (Ret.) U.S. Army, distinguished guests, and a moment of silence to commemorate the signing of the World War I Armistice", said the city.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) informs that "the roots of Veterans Day date back to 1947 when an Alabama veteran who served in World War II named Raymond Weeks organized 'National Veterans Day' to recognize all veterans". The VA adds that what later became known as Armistice Day turned into Veterans Day in 1954 when Congress approved and President Dwight Eisenhower signed into law a piece of legislation rechristening this day.
