The Galveston Fire Department (GFD) responded to a blaze that consumed a Denny’s restaurant at 14th Street near Seawall Boulevard. The incident occurred around 1:20 p.m. on October 30 as the eatery was moving away from the lunch rush.
According to a social media post by the city of Galveston, the fire originated in the restaurant’s attic and north winds made it a struggle to contain. The post also mentioned that firefighters received assistance from the Santa Fe and Hitchcock fire departments, and the Jamaica Beach Volunteer Fire Department responded to calls on Galveston’s West End while the city’s firefighters were battling the blaze at Denny’s.
Fortunately, firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to nearby businesses and residences, and no injuries were reported. Richie Pearson, Galveston’s assistant fire chief, mentioned that aside from the wind, firefighters had to contend with low water pressure. The fire was put out at 3:30 p.m., with hotspots being extinguished an hour later. Pearson declared the restaurant a total loss. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown.
The city of Galveston expressed their gratitude to the Galveston Fire Department for their efforts in containing and extinguishing the fire.
