Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and the Houston Police Department have announced on Aug. 24 a $100,000 reward sum for any information leading to arrest following the death of a New Orleans police officer last week.

Off-duty New Orleans detective Everett Briscoe was shot and killed at a restaurant in the Galleria area, having only been in Houston for two hours before his death.

"You have an obligation to step up and provide information," Turner said in a press conference

Briscoe was a member of the Zulu Social Club, a New Orleans organization well-known for its elaborate Zulu parade each year during the Mardi Gras celebration, and was in Houston to meet with Zulu brothers who had moved out of the New Orleans area, according to ABC13

Briscoe and the other members of the club had convened at Grotto Ristorante in the 4700 block of Westheimer. Elroy James, president of the Zulu Social Club, had only stepped out to walk to CVS when he was called and told that Briscoe had been shot, according to ABC13.

"While I was looking for the pain medicine, my phone rang and it said, 'Elroy, you gotta come back. They shot DJ.' I was kind of startled and said, 'What do you mean? I just left.' And they said, 'They shot DJ. You gotta come back. And they've shot [Briscoe] as well,'" James said to ABC13.

Despite being conscious, alert and receiving medical attention, Briscoe was pronounced dead at the scene on Aug. 21. While the cause of the shooting is still unknown, Houston police are still looking for two men in a grey or silver Nissan who witnesses say were responsible for the shooting.

"Our hearts are together on this one, but this senseless crime has to stop," said Houston City Councilwoman Abbie Kamin according to WDSU

Briscoe was a 13-year veteran and leaves behind his wife and their two sons.
