Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz of Texas' 15th district has introduced the Sgt. Alfredo ‘Freddy’ Gonzalez Memorial Veterans’ Hospital Act in recognition of Veterans Day. The proposed legislation would allow the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to build a new veterans hospital in the Rio Grande Valley, named after Texas veteran Sgt. Alfredo 'Freddy' Gonzalez.

De La Cruz also sent a letter to VA Secretary Doug Collins, asking for Mobile Medical Units to be provided at Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans' Hospital in San Antonio. These units are intended to help improve access to care for veterans living in rural parts of Texas.

"Our Veterans answered the call to serve and made immense sacrifices for our great nation. Though we can never repay them for their service, we can show our gratitude by ensuring every Veteran has access to affordable housing, quality health care, and the benefits they deserve. I will continue to work across the aisle on efforts that put the needs of our Veterans first," said Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz.

De La Cruz has previously taken several actions aimed at supporting veterans in Texas. She helped secure House approval for the bipartisan Disabled Veterans Housing Support Act, which changes how disability income is counted so more disabled veterans can access housing support. She led efforts on the Sergeant Alfredo ‘Freddy’ Gonzalez Congressional Gold Medal Act and was involved with the bipartisan VA Home Loan Awareness Act of 2025, designed to make sure veterans know about their eligibility for VA home loans.

Other legislative activities include leading the House version of the HUD-USDA-VA Interagency Coordination Act, which seeks better collaboration among federal agencies to expand housing programs for citizens and veterans. De La Cruz also co-sponsored the Major Richard Star Act, supporting full military retirement and disability compensation for those forced into early retirement due to combat injuries.

Monica De La Cruz has represented Texas’ 15th district since replacing Vicente Gonzalez in 2023. In recent elections, she won against Michelle Vallejo twice: once in 2022 with 53.3% of votes and again in 2024 with 57.1%.
