HISD partners with LBJ Hospital for student art exhibition

Harris Health Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital celebrated National Hospital Week (May 12-18) with the unveiling of their inaugural Community Visual Art Exhibition Gallery collection. Entitled “LBJ Exposed,” the artwork is a collection of photographs taken by HISD student artists that depict the zeitgeist of the community surrounding LBJ and the city of Houston.


Luttrell urges EPA action on cybersecurity vulnerabilities in water systems

WASHINGTON – Congressman Morgan Luttrell (R-TX) has sent a letter to Michael Regan, Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), addressing recent cybersecurity vulnerabilities identified in community water systems across the United States. The alert from the EPA revealed that many water systems are failing to adequately address cybersecurity risks, underscoring the need for a thorough examination of the current regulatory framework within critical infrastructure sectors.


Neuroscientist blends dance with science at UN AI summit

University of Houston neuroscientist Jose Luis Contreras-Vidal, a pioneer in brain-machine interfaces, will present at the United Nations AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva, Switzerland on May 31. Known for his work in controlling wearable exoskeletons for rehabilitation and mapping art-evoked brain activity, Contreras-Vidal will not merely give a speech but will also showcase “Meeting of Minds,” a blend of artistic performance and scientific experiment.


Houston calls for proposals under national creative placemaking grant

May 22, 2024 -- The Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs (MOCA) is calling for Houston’s best ideas to endorse for the national Our Town grant program. Led by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Our Town grant seeks projects that integrate arts, culture, and design into local efforts to strengthen communities. Successful projects have advanced local economic, physical, and social outcomes in communities and are laying the groundwork for systemic changes.


OPINION: A primer on Houston’s tax increment reinvestment zones

In the last few years, there has been a great deal of media and public attention on the City of Houston’s tax increment reinvestment zones (TIRZs). The TIRZs are a murky, complex world that elude simple explanations or generalizations. It is also very difficult to get good data on them. The City has done a poor job of overseeing the TIRZs and the financial reporting is disjointed and difficult to access.

HISD held its sixth annual Career and Military Signing Day on May 16 inside Delmar Fieldhouse. The event celebrates seniors graduating from the District’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs and those who have decided to serve in the military.
