Governor Greg Abbott addressed the Texas Border Sheriff's Coalition's 20th Annual Spring Meeting in Austin, where he stressed the urgency of bail reform in Texas. He underscored the ongoing collaboration between state and local entities in securing the border.
Abbott commended the sheriffs for their role in maintaining community safety and border security. He stated, "Sheriffs have been the brave law enforcement officers tasked with keeping their communities safe and secure." Abbott criticized the current bail system, highlighting how "too many judges grant repeat offenders two, three, and 16 chances that they do not deserve."
He expressed the sheriffs' pivotal role in confronting these challenges, likening them to "unsung heroes of law enforcement."
In his address, Abbott also expressed gratitude to Texas sheriffs for their efforts in protecting the state amidst the previous federal administration's border policies. He pointed to the sheriffs' participation in Operation Lone Star, which includes seizing substantial amounts of fentanyl and arresting numerous criminals, among them drug cartel members and human smugglers.
Abbott emphasized the importance of these actions in defending Texas and its residents from various criminal threats, noting that these operations have targeted individuals who have committed murder against law enforcement officers.
