Commissioner Lesley Briones is focusing on recovery efforts in Harris County following the derecho storm in May 2024. On November 7, staff from Harris County Precinct 4 collaborated with Trees For Houston and Sinclair Elementary School to mark Texas Arbor Day through a community tree planting event.

Sinclair Elementary School and its neighborhood were significantly affected by the storm, which uprooted trees and damaged temporary school structures. The event saw students, along with Precinct 4 staff and volunteers, planting trees at a local SPARK Park. Community members also received over 100 free trees to plant at home.

Commissioner Briones emphasized the importance of investing in children and education as part of her commitment to sustainability and community engagement. "As a mother of three children and a former teacher, Commissioner Briones believes investing in children and education is investing in our future," the press release said.

The initiative aims to enhance the urban tree canopy while educating young people about the role of trees in stormwater management, air quality improvement, and neighborhood beautification. This effort aligns with recommendations from the All in 4 Inner Northwest Community Plan, which was developed with input from more than 800 residents.
