Today, Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz of Texas issued a statement following the U.S. State Department's Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs' decision to deny Mexico's request for water not covered by treaty obligations.
De La Cruz expressed gratitude to President Trump for his decisive action, stating, "Thank you, President Trump, for taking decisive action to hold the Government of Mexico accountable for their lack of compliance with the 1944 Water Treaty. Mexico owes the Rio Grande Valley farmers more than one million-acre-feet of water. It is unacceptable and unfair to send our water resources to help Mexican farmers while they refuse to comply in sending us water for our South Texas farmers." She added that this move was a critical step in supporting local farmers and communities.
In related developments, De La Cruz recently collaborated with Secretary Rollins to announce $280 million in aid funds from the USDA directed towards South Texas farmers. This funding was secured through last year's end-of-year continuing resolution.
Previously, De La Cruz introduced the South Texas Agriculture Emergency Assistance Act. The act authorizes the Secretary of Agriculture to allocate $280 million in aid funds for agricultural producers in South Texas who have experienced financial losses due to Mexico's failure to deliver water as per agreements. These aid funds were signed into law as part of a continuing resolution passed in December 2024.
