Governor Greg Abbott has extended his congratulations to the City of Corpus Christi for achieving the designation of a Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community. This recognition, awarded by Travel Texas in the program's inaugural year, acknowledges Visit Corpus Christi's efforts to enhance tourism as a means of economic growth, job creation, and attracting visitors both nationally and internationally.
Governor Abbott emphasized the significance of tourism to Texas' economy, stating, "Tourism is critical to both our local and state economies, supporting one in 11 jobs across Texas." He noted that travel generates over $193.8 billion annually and supports 1.3 million jobs statewide. Abbott encouraged other communities to seek this certification to bolster local tourism and employment.
Travel Texas Director Tim Fennell highlighted Corpus Christi's appeal as a tourist destination: “Corpus Christi is a hallmark of Gulf Coast tourism, where unforgettable outdoor experiences meet family-friendly attractions and colorful culture.” The designation recognizes the city's dedication to providing memorable visitor experiences.
Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa praised Corpus Christi as a prime tourist spot with diverse offerings such as natural beauty, museums, sports teams, and dining options. Senator Adam Hinojosa echoed these sentiments, describing the city as a cultural hub with attractions like the USS Lexington and Texas State Aquarium.
Representative Todd Hunter acknowledged the importance of tourism for economic growth in Texas: “This designation showcases our city's vibrant culture and attractions while underscoring the vital role of tourism in driving economic growth and job creation in Texas.”
Visit Corpus Christi Chief Operating Officer Meredith Darden expressed pride in receiving the designation: “Receiving the Tourism Friendly Texas designation is a point of pride for all of us.” Mayor Paulette Guajardo also commended Visit Corpus Christi’s work in elevating the city as a premier travel destination.
Richard Lomax, Chair of Visit Corpus Christi Board, celebrated local businesses' contributions to tourism: “Our small businesses are the backbone of Corpus Christi’s vibrant tourism industry.”
The Tourism Friendly Texas Community program invites local governments or non-profit organizations leading tourism promotion efforts to apply.
