Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz from Texas has introduced a new piece of legislation known as the Honor Inauguration Day Act. The proposed law mandates that American flags be flown at their highest position each Inauguration Day, emphasizing the significance of this event in celebrating democratic processes.
The introduction of this bill comes in response to President Biden's decision to fly the flag at half-staff during the inauguration of his successor, which would mark a first in U.S. history. Congresswoman De La Cruz stated, “President Biden has decided, for the first time in American history, to fly the flag at half-staff during a successor's Inauguration. Meaning, when President Trump is sworn in, the flag will not be fully raised.” She further added that “Inauguration Day celebrates the will of the American people and their sacred right to vote and determine their own governance. It is not a day for the flag to be at half-staff.”
The legislation specifies its application solely to Presidential Inauguration Days. It allows for ceremonial lowering of flags on other days as deemed appropriate by presidential discretion.
Several representatives have co-sponsored this bill alongside Congresswoman De La Cruz: Brian Bain (TX-36), Randy Weber (TX-14), Pete Sessions (TX-17), Jake Ellzey (TX-06), and Brandon Gill (TX-26).
