The Mediterranean Festival | The Mediterranean Festival

The Mediterranean Festival, hosted by St. George Orthodox Church in Houston, Texas, will take place in October. The event aims to highlight Mediterranean culture, cuisine, and the Orthodox faith.

On October 26, 2024, St. George Orthodox Christian Church will hold a festival from 11 AM to 10 PM, gathering congregants to improve the church grounds and prepare Mediterranean cuisine. According to the Mediterranean Festival event webpage, the event will include dishes from Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Serbia, Russia, Italy, and Greece. Featured items such as grape leaves, kibbe, perogies, kielbasa, and baklava have been served to many visitors over the years.

The festival returned in 2023 after a 15-year pause. In 2024, it will offer traditional dishes as well as new options like beef and chicken kabobs, falafel, hummus, and zaatar bread. Attendees can also enjoy sweets and beverages and explore a marketplace with crafts from local vendors. A silent auction will allow guests to bid on various items. Activities for children will include a petting zoo, face painting, and balloon artists. The focus is on Orthodox traditions and Mediterranean culture for the Houston community.

Last year’s Houston Mediterranean Festival Market drew over 2,500 visitors. The event encourages volunteers to help make it happen. To facilitate volunteer sign-ups, the event is organized into teams based on areas of interest with shifts available throughout the day.

St. George Orthodox Christian Church is a community focused on worshiping the Holy Trinity and follows the teachings of the Church founded by Jesus Christ. Founded in 1928 by Middle Eastern immigrants in Houston, the church relocated to its current site in West University in 1954 and expanded its facilities to serve a growing congregation. It has established mission churches in Greater Houston and continues to support its community.
