The Office of the Texas Attorney General has launched an investigation into liberal advocacy group Media Matters for America for purported fraudulent activity. The group is under scrutiny following allegations that it manipulated data on a social media platform.
Paxton, a Republican, expressed concern over allegations that the non-profit organization fraudulently manipulated data on X.com, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. "Today I opened an investigation into Media Matters for potential fraudulent activity after X CEO Elon Musk accused the left-wing media watchdog group of manipulating data on the social media platform," he said.
Moving further into the matter, Axios reported that Elon Musk, who bought X more than a year ago for $44 billion, brought a defamation lawsuit against Media Matters for America in the Northern District of Texas, Fort Worth Division in response to a report it published about ads running next to pro-Nazi content. The suit blasts the group’s tactics as manipulative and deceptive, according to the website.
Moreover, Fox News reported that Andrew Bailey, Paxton’s counterpart in Missouri, said that his team is studying the possibility of looking into the matter. Musk has faced criticism for how he has operated X, including earlier this month when he was accused of commenting on a Tweet that appeared antisemitic, according to Fox News.
