The cathedral church for the Episcopal Diocese of Texas will hold a memorial service for Queen Elizabeth II on Sept. 22, per a report from Houston NBC affiliate KPRC.

The queen, who was the longest reigning British monarch, died Thursday at the age of 96 while at her vacation castle in Scotland.

“We remember and honor Queen Elizabeth II,” the diocese said in a tweet.

KPRC reported that the service at Christ Church Cathedral at 1117 Texas Ave. in Downtown Houston will start at 6:30 p.m.

During Queen Elizabeth II’s 70-year reign, she was the supreme governor of the Church of England on which the Episcopal Church in the U.S. is based.

“My prayers for peace go out for her, for her loved ones, and for all those who knew and loved her throughout the world,” the Most Reverend Michael Bruce Curry, the presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church, said in a statement. “Her resiliency, her dignity and her model of quiet faith and piety have been – and will continue to be – an example for so many. May she rest in peace and rise in glory.”

The U.K. is currently in a 10-day mourning period for the queen, whose body is lying in state at Westminster Hall following its arrival from Scotland, according to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

The BBC reported that hundreds of thousands of people are expected to walk past the queen’s coffin until her state funeral on Monday.

“It gave me such a feeling of pride – that she was the queen of our country and she served us so amazingly,” a mourner identified as Teresa told the BBC. “I felt proud to be British.”

Back in Houston, the U.S. fourth largest city memorialized the queen in its own way.

Several officials and ordinary citizens fondly recalled her 1991 visit, and Houston City Hall was bathed in the colors of the Union Jack – red, white and blue – in memory of the queen.

The British Consulate at 1301 Fannin St. has made a condolence book available for the public to sign. The book can be found in the consulate’s lobby, which is open 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Friday.
