Authorities said a shooting along a stretch of the Gulf Freeway in La Marque in Galveston County on Sunday (April 10) claimed the life of a 42-year-old woman who worked as a newborn intensive care unit (NICU) nurse at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Houston FOX affiliate KRIV reported.
According to the station, police found Patrina Compton inside her vehicle, which was allegedly pockmarked by bullets.
The incident left Compton’s family devastated and searching for answers.
"It’s tragic for our whole family," sister Stacy Compton told KRIV. "She didn’t bother anybody. For this to happen to her, it just hit everybody hard."
According to Stacy, her sister was on the way home from bringing some food to their mother's house for an upcoming barbecue.
Stacy told Houston CBS affiliate KHOU that she asked Patrina to contact her when she made it home.
"I laid down for a while and I get a knock at the door, they're telling me she didn’t make it," she said, KHOU reported.
Stacy added that she was Patrina's emergency contact, expressing disbelief that her sister is gone.
Law enforcement believes that the shooting wasn't an accident, KHOU reported.
Stacy; however, doesn't believe Patrina was a foe to anyone.
"The way it happened, it seems like it was intentional – not because it was her – but maybe because of some other things that was going on," Stacy told KHOU. "But nobody wanted to harm her personally, so it wasn't anything that she had to do with."
KRIV reported that Patrina, who was also a mother, had worked at UTMB for about 20 years.
"She was an all-around good person," Stacy told the station.
According to KRIV, police haven't made any arrests and anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call police.
"If anybody knows anything, please say something," Stacy said, per KRIV.
