Houston-based media outlets reported that authorities in Sugar Land are investigating an alleged home invasion that occurred on Friday morning (March 25). Police say that three gunmen broke into a residence in the 2600 block of West Lake Drive and attempted to rob a man and his young granddaughter, Houston CBS affiliate KHOU reported.
According to the Sugar Land Police Department, the incident happened at 7:30 a.m. just as the grandfather was about to take the girl to school. KHOU reported that the suspects purportedly met them at the door and forced the pair back inside the house.
"It has been known to us that they own a business in the Houston area, a couple of businesses and we believe that they were actually looking at these individuals for specific reasons," Sugar Land Chief of Police Eric Robins said, KHOU reported. "We’re not sure exactly what they are, but we are still investigating at this time."
Police told KHOU that one of the victims was tied up. Another grandfather who resided at the home recalled to the station about how he was awakened by the commotion.
Ryan Nguyen said he grabbed a gun and attempted to stop the intruders, KHOU reported.
“First I tried to shoot, but my gun is not loaded," Nguyen told the station. "And then they saw I have the gun, and then they run. And then when I run outside, I load it and then I shoot them outside. I shoot two times outside, but they run so fast, and then they jumped to the wall, and then they run.”
Authorities deduce that the family was targeted, according to KHOU.
Neither the victims nor the suspects sustained injuries, investigators told the station.
The unidentified gunmen allegedly jumped the back fence to flee the scene.
Police haven't made any arrests, KHOU reported.
The incident forced nearby school into lockdown as police combed the area for the suspects but has since been lifted, the station reported.
KRIV reported that students at Harmony Science Academy Sugar Land were all safe indoors, but school officials had to cancel outside transition and recess for the rest of the day.
The campus was also deemed off-limits to visitors.
The station reported that the school informed parents about the incident on Facebook.
