A 21-year-old Conroe man has been arrested and charged in connection with a Galveston hit-and-run last week that killed a physician who was on a bike ride, Houston-based media outlets reported. Houston ABC affiliate KTRK reported that authorities implicated Logan Llewellyn in the death of Dr. Nancy Hughes.
According to KTRK, the Seguin Police Department arrested Llewellyn on Sunday (March 20). The station reported that the motorist is detained at the Guadalupe County Jail on a $200,000 bond and is awaiting extradition to Galveston County.
"This is not the end of the investigation; it is just the beginning," the Galveston Police Department said in a statement.
Police allege that Llewellyn struck the 67-year-old Hughes with his vehicle near a beach on Galveston's East End on Friday (March 18) morning, Houston FOX affiliate KRIV reported.
A pair of passersby later discovered the doctor and her bike in the vicinity of Cherry Hill and East Beach Drive and summoned for help, the station reported.
Authorities said Hughes succumbed to injuries at the scene.
KRIV reported that police seized the vehicle allegedly driven by Llewellyn Sunday morning.
Working with their Galveston counterparts, Seguin investigators executed an arrest warrant that led to the apprehension of the driver.
According to KRIV, anyone with information on the incident is urged to call Galveston County Crime Stoppers at (409) 763-TIPS.
Hughes's loved ones are demanding justice, the station reported.
"My son just found out about it today, and it was really hard giving him that news," her eldest daughter, Laura, told KRIV.
Hughes's husband was reportedly with her at the time of the crash, to which Laura said he was left devastated.
"They had been married for 46 years, they were high school sweethearts dating since the age of 14," Laura said, according to KRIV.
The station reported that in addition to her spouse and oldest daughter, the physician is survived by another daughter, a son and a pair of grandsons.
