The actions of a Dickinson Independent School District (DISD) bus driver during the afternoon of Feb. 23 saved the lives of the students aboard.

DISD, which is in north Galveston County, wrote on its Facebook page that the bus was plowing its after school route when the driver smelled smoke.

He immediately pulled the vehicle over in the Bay Colony subdivision and ordered the few remaining students out.

Everyone on the bus was safe and accounted for, according to the school district.

“That quick thinking of that bus driver totally avoided an unimaginable tragedy,” DISD spokeswoman Tammy Dowdy told the Galveston County Daily News.

Dowdy added that no one was on the bus when the engine compartment caught fire.

The school district sent out another bus to take the students home.

According to Dickinson Assistant Fire Chief Tim Johnson, there were no injuries reported.

The fire is under investigation, Houston NBC affiliate KPRC reported.
