NFL running back Adrian Peterson was arrested following what officials have described as a verbal and physical altercation with his wife on a plane headed for Houston from Los Angeles.
The alleged incident happened the day before Valentine's Day.
"At approximately 8:30 a.m. this morning, Los Angeles Airport Police received a call to respond to Terminal 7 for a possible domestic violence on board an aircraft. The flight was departing to Houston, Texas, but has to return to the gate due to a verbal and physical altercation between a male suspect and a female victim," an airport representative said in a statement for Click 2 Houston.
Authorities said Peterson, a Texas native, was initially charged with domestic violence - injury to a spouse stemming from the investigation conducted by airport police. Peterson was booked at LAPD Pacific Division, but released on $50,000 bond later that afternoon, Click 2 Houston reported.
"This is a private misunderstanding between husband and wife and we anticipate it will all be resolved shortly," a representative for the Petersons said in a statement, according to Click 2 Houston.
Investigators said Peterson's wife, Ashley, continued on the flight to Houston with the other passengers, ABC 13 reported.
According to ESPN, a source told the sports outlet that Ashley Peterson would not pursue charges against her husband, who is currently a free-agent.
The source told ESPN that Peterson grabbed his wife's ring and scratched her finger.
He was scheduled to appear in court in connection to the charge on June 16.
ESPN reported this isn't the first time Peterson has been in trouble, and noted that in 2014 he was charged with felony child abuse but plead no contest to a lesser charge. Authorities said Peterson used a switch to spank his young son. He was given two years probation, paid a fine, performed community service and was suspended from the NFL for a year.
