Mary Nan Huffman won the special election for Houston’s City Council District G and will fill the seat vacated by Greg Travis.

Huffman received nearly 54% of the vote (4,547 cast in her favor). The second-place finisher was Piper Madland, who collected 2,513 votes and nearly 30% of the vote, according to election returns.

“I’m pleased and proud to declare victory tonight,” Huffman said in a statement released after the election. “We led throughout the night’s returns, never relinquishing the lead. We had an amazing group of volunteers who worked straight through the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays."

Born in San Antonio and raised in Denton, Huffman attended the University of Oklahoma. According to her bio, she worked as a prosecutor in the Montgomery County District Attorney’s office for almost 10 years, before becoming the attorney for the Houston Police Officers’ Union. In that role, she represented officers in a variety of matters. She has also served on the board of directors for Children’s Safe Harbor.

"I am blessed to have such tremendous support," Huffman said. "Mayor Turner has already called to offer his congratulations. I told him that I am ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work.”

She ran for Harris County District Attorney in November 2020 but was defeated by incumbent Kim Ogg.

A mother of two boys, Huffman said she is “passionate about protecting the youngest and most vulnerable in our society.” She has prosecuted a number of internet-related crimes committed against children including the possession, production and promotion of child pornography and child human trafficking.

Travis resigned in October to run as a Republican for the Texas House of Representatives.
