The Chevron Houston Marathon is still scheduled to take place on Jan. 14 to commemorate the event's 50th anniversary despite concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a Click2Houston report.

Muffy King, director of marketing, media and brand for the Houston Marathon Committee, stated that although the number of omicron cases has increased, the event would continue to be held in person.

“We are continuing to monitor and work closely with both our medical director and city stakeholders who are advising us on the best policies and procedures for the upcoming event," King told Click2Houston.

King added that the health of everyone involved in the event is essential.

"At this time, we do not foresee cancelation of the event and will certainly keep each of our partners apprised as the event draws near,” King said.

Additionally, race officials issued an email to participants reassuring them that all precautions had been taken in accordance with the city's existing COVID-19 guidelines.

These measures include providing more space to allow for appropriate social distance and scheduling "Packet Pick-Up Time" for registrants to minimize crowding.

The marathon billed as the "largest single-day sporting event in Houston," was conducted virtually last year in response to the initial wave of the COVID-19 epidemic, Houston Daily reports.

According to King, the race has risen in popularity over the years while maintaining a family-friendly atmosphere.
