A 90-day countdown to the return of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has begun after a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19.
The ‘90 Days 'til 90 Years’ celebration marks the official countdown, beginning Nov. 30 and running until the city’s 90th anniversary celebration Feb. 28-March 20.
“Yesterday, @RODEOHOUSTON kicked off the countdown to their 90th anniversary. Each year, I look forward to dusting off my boots, putting on my cowboy hat, riding in the parade, attending concerts and much more,” Mayor Sylvester Turner wrote in a tweet Dec. 1.
With a 90th anniversary-themed mural in downtown Houston raising nine-stories tall and the launch of the “#90ReasonstoRodeo” social media campaign, residents are already gearing up for the much anticipated celebration.
“The 2022 rodeo season will be one to remember,” Turner added in his tweet.
According to a report by Click 2 Houston, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo seeks to promote agriculture across the city by showcasing Western heritage and providing year-long educational support to Texas youth within the community.
“The Rodeo has become an annual celebration of Western heritage that is truly woven into the fabric of our city, which is why we are thrilled to collaborate with one of Houston’s most iconic artists, GONZO247, to create a Rodeo-themed mural in downtown Houston,” Rodeo President and CEO Chris Boleman told Click 2 Houston.
In anticipation of the event, Houstonians are invited to snag 90th anniversary merchandise from the Rodeo website, including limited-edition collectibles and Rodeo-inspired garments, the article states.
On March 11, 2020, the celebration came to a halt at the same time the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic and Houston and Harris County declared a public health emergency.
The following year, the Rodeo events were severely limited due to ongoing COVID-19 concerns, the report states. The city has not yet announced mask requirements or safety measures for the upcoming event.
