Houston cities exhibited increased tax collections for a 12-month period

Sales and use tax collections saw an increase in the 12 most populous Houston cities.

For the 12-month period ending July 2021, the total collection was $1 billion, a 6.6% growth from $976.4 million for the same period in the previous year.

“[The] oil and gas mining exhibited the largest percentage increase among major economic sectors” and that “construction and manufacturing returns both exhibited strong growth” in July collections, Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar stated, Greater Houston Partnership reported.

In July 2020, collections totaled only $75.3 million as compared to those in July 2021 which totaled $90.5 million — a 20.1% increase.

Houston sales tax collections in July also increased year over year by 19.2%. All cities recorded more than a 10% increase over that period except League City.

The increased demand and increased savings due to the pandemic resulted in higher spending in July of 2021 and the calendar year as a whole, which in turn increased tax collections, according to houston.org.
