A poll has found that when it comes to who is trusted more, a political divide exists, with Republicans having more trust in state officials and Democrats having faith in federal officials.

The poll, conducted by Convention of States Action, partnering with The Trafalgar Group, was conducted July 29 through Aug. 1 and included more than 1,000 likely 2022 election voters.

Mark Meckler, president of Convention of States Action (COSA), pointed out that Republicans have long supported state control.

“Republicans, Independents and many Democrats are watching with horror as Washington, D.C., pursues anti-freedom policies that are destroying the fabric of the nation they love. It is also clear that Republican primary voters have almost no confidence in Congressional Republicans to fight for them and stand up to a power-hungry federal government,” he said in a release.

According to the poll, just over 63% of potential Republican primary voters trust governors and state lawmakers to promote the issues that are important to them and defend their rights, while only 14.2% of Democrats have faith in state legislatures and governors, according to the poll.

“We are seeing a surge in trust for Republican governors and state legislatures because leaders like Ron DeSantis—who performed strongly in one of our other polls—are taking a stand,” Meckler added in the statement. “The framers of the Constitution designed our system to operate this way.”

According to its website, COSA’s mission is to use a limited Article V Convention to propose constitutional amendments that impose limitations on the size and scope of the federal government. Its agenda includes a balanced budget requirement and term limits for federal officials, according to the website.

“We are seeing rising momentum for a Convention of States that will return Washington, D.C., back to its original, strict limits and put states back in charge,” Meckler claimed in the statement.

While COSA rallied on key components of the poll, it also found that more Americans trust either President Joe Biden or congressional Democrats to defend and promote key issues they hold as important, with 34.8% behind federal Democrats and 33% on the side of Republican state leaders. The poll found that only 15% had faith in Republicans in Congress. On the state side, there was little faith in Democrat state leaders (9.4%).

Texas edged closer to supporting a Democrat in the 2020 presidential election, with Harris County supporting Biden in the election, according to Ballotpedia. The state has 13 Democrats among its delegation in Congress.

Despite more support for Democrats, Texas remains firmly in control of Republicans. Ballotpedia noted that both the state legislature and executive branches remain firmly in GOP control.
