Humble Summer Creek's football head coach Kenny Harrison is facing a conundrum of having to make a choice between two promising candidates for the position of starting quarterback by the time district play starts.
Jahrik Jones and Cory Nichols are competing for the position and have been sharing snaps during non-district play, Houston Chronicle reported.
“Both of them did a good job,” Harrison said, according to Houston Chronicle. “We had two different packages for each quarterback, and we will continue to do that. We’re fortunate to have two quarterbacks and both will continue to play. We will make a decision who’s going to be the starting quarterback before district.”
The Summer Creek Buldogs recently kicked off the 2021 campaign with an emphatic 48-0 win over Friendswood. Harrison credited the victory to the team's defense but believes that the team's offense still needs some work.
“Our defense continued to make Friendswood make another play,” Harrison said, according to Houston Chronicle “Friendswood had some big plays in the game, but our defense bent but didn’t break. Offensively we have a completely different staff. We’re starting to gel a little bit on offense, but we have a long way to go. By the time we get to district we will be clicking on all cylinders.”
The next few non-district matchups will determine who the Bulldogs will have under center full-time between Jones and Nichols.
“This is my first senior group from when I got here so they have been through the program,” Houston Chronicle reported. “They trust the process and know it’s one week at a time. They’ve put the Friendswood game behind them and I’m looking forward to taking it week by week with them. The confidence from our seniors is high.”
Jones's success with the JV earned him a promotion, VYPE Houston reported.
Summer Creek still has three more non-district games before district play begins as of Sept. 2.
