U.S. Rep. Lizzie Fletcher (D-Houston) said that $10 million in federal funding will go toward storm repairs at the Barker Reservoir Watershed, according to a news release from her office.
"Our community has worked together to recover from Hurricane Harvey’s devastating impacts, and there is still much work to do. I am glad to be able to announce that more help is on the way with FEMA’s award of nearly $10 million to restore our bayous and creeks in the Barker Watershed," Fletcher said. "Dredging and restoration of our water conveyance systems will help protect homes and businesses in our district."
The Barker Reservoir Watershed includes several drainage channels in Texas' Seventh Congressional District that are owned, operated and maintained by the Harris County Flood Control District, the press release said.
An estimated 206,863 cubic yards of sand and sediment was deposited along the banks and within the channels throughout Barker Reservoir during Hurricane Harvey, the press release said.
"One way we can prevent flooding in our neighborhoods is by making sure creeks and bayous flow smoothly. I'm pleased to announce a FEMA award of nearly $10 million to @HCFCD to remove sediment from Harvey from those channels in #TX07 and the Barker Watershed," Fletcher said in a Twitter post.
