State Rep. Shawn Thierry posted to Facebook that a health scare that sent her to the emergency room for tests may have been related to an ongoing problem with nighttime muscle cramps. | Facebook

A recent hospital stay for state Rep. Shawn Thierry (D-Houston) came in light of health concerns for the representative, but tests came back negative for anything serious, and may have been related to muscle cramps.

Thierry took to social media to update her constituents on the situation following her trip to the hospital.

“I want to thank each of you for the powerful prayers, thoughtful posts, kind messages and well wishes for my recovery,” Thierry said in a post to her official Facebook page. “I am doing much better.”

Thierry said that she wound up in an Austin emergency room for a panel of tests at the request of her doctor after her creatine kinase (CK) numbers were ten times higher than normal range. Such increased levels can be indicative of kidney or heart damage.

“Praise God that the D-Dymer test and ultrasound showed no blood clots. And other test showed no cardiac issues, and my kidneys are functioning well,” she said in her post.

Thierry said that it is believed the high creatine kinase level was related to night cramps. The doctors indicated to her that it is possible severe leg cramps caused a breakdown that elevated the protein levels in her bloodstream.

“The physicians put me on strong IV fluids and a prescription for the leg cramps,” she said in her post. “They released me and I’m feeling much better.”

Thierry said that she wanted to share her story in case it can help someone else, particularly given the dangers that muscle strain or injuries could pose and of which many may not be aware.

In addition to thanking those who had offered her support, Thierry offered her gratitude to the staff at St. David’s Medical Center. She said they were “professional and beyond kind,” and that she would recommend the emergency room to anyone in need of emergency care in Austin.
