HISD students engage with politics through presidential debate watch parties

A recent Harvard poll indicates that more than half of young Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 definitely plan on voting in this November’s Presidential election. For many high schoolers, this November will mark the first major election in which they will be eligible to vote, and excitement is high in HISD. High school students turned out by the dozens on Tuesday night to watch the debate between former president Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris at several campus-based watch parties throughout the District.

Reps. Nehls and Self introduce legislation for venue change in federal trials

Today, Congressman Troy E. Nehls (R-TX-22) and Congressman Keith Self (R-TX-03) introduced the Venue Named Under Exception Act, or the VENUE Act. This legislation would allow individuals charged with a crime on federal property in the Washington, D.C. area to transfer their trial to a federal court in their home jurisdiction.


De La Cruz introduces bill to ensure border patrol pay during government shutdown

Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz (TX-15) introduced the "Pay Our Border Patrol and Customs Agents Act of 2025" in the U.S. House of Representatives on September 12, 2024. The legislation aims to ensure that U.S. Border Patrol agents and officers from the Office of Field Operations continue to receive their pay during any potential government shutdown in fiscal year 2025.


University of Houston project selected for USDA initiative on soil health

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture has selected a University of Houston project as one of 12 nationwide initiatives aimed at enhancing soil health and productivity through innovative tools and techniques. The UH project will focus on developing a new nutrient management strategy to grow crops in poor-quality soils with higher resistance to climate change.
