Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo is set to be discharged from her residential treatment for clinical depression on September 16th, according to an announcement from her office. Hidalgo, who took medical leave last month, will transition to outpatient care and plans to officially return to her duties on October 2nd.


Rice University on upset win over UH: 'The Bayou Bucket is coming home'

In a stunning upset, the Rice Owls football team emerged victorious against the University of Houston (UH) Cougars, reclaiming the prized Bayou Bucket after eight attempts. The game, which took place on September 2, saw the Owls triumph in double overtime with a score of 43-41, as reported by the Associated Press and Houston CBS affiliate KHOU News.


Ryans on unsuccessful debut as Texans coach: 'We gave up too many points'

In a disappointing debut for head coach Demeco Ryans, the Houston Texans suffered a 25-9 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. The game also marked the beginning of the C.J. Stroud era, as the rookie quarterback took the field for his first professional game. Stroud threw for 242 yards but was sacked five times by the Ravens defense. One notable play saw Stroud catching his own pass after it was tipped by a Ravens defender.


League City tabs Woitena new police chief

League City, Texas has appointed a new police chief, Cliff Woitena, following the retirement of Gary Ratliff. The League City Police Department (LCPD) announced the appointment on September 12th, with Woitena being administered the oath of office immediately after the unanimous vote by the League City City Council.


National Policing Institute to honor ex-Houston Chief of Police Brown in October

The National Policing Institute (NPI) will be honoring former Houston Mayor and Chief of Police, Lee P. Brown, with the Hubert Williams Equal Justice and Effective Policing Award. This prestigious accolade recognizes Brown's advocacy for fairness, equal justice, and civil rights during his tenure as the New York City Police Commissioner. NPI President Jim Burch commended Brown for his exceptional contributions in initiating positive changes in policing, promoting diversity in law enforcement, and addressing concerns of bias.


Galveston County Health District warns about vibrio after resident dies from eating raw oysters

The Galveston County Health District (GCHD) is warning residents about the dangers of vibrio vulnificus after a man died from an infection caused by consuming raw oysters. Vibrio can be found in coastal waters, including warm, salt water and brackish water, and is transferred to humans through raw or undercooked shellfish. The rise in vibrio infections in the U.S. has been attributed to unusually warm ocean temperatures. In response, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a health advisory on September 1st.

Physicians in the Houston area gathered virtually on September 7 to urge Congress to implement site-neutral payment policies. The objective of these policies is to ensure that patients continue to pay the same prices for healthcare services, regardless of whether they are received at a small physician practice or a large hospital. The call for action comes as hospitals increasingly acquire independent physician offices, leading to higher fees for services and additional facility charges for privately insured patients.
