The University of Houston System has announced the addition of four new members to its Board of Regents, following appointments by Texas Governor Greg Abbott. The appointees—Alonzo Cantu, Bryan Clark, Tommy Lucas, and Lynden Rose—will each serve on the board through either 2029 or 2031.
UH System Chancellor Renu Khator commented on the appointments: “I am excited to welcome our new regents, who bring exceptional talent and a shared drive to advance our mission. Strong leadership is essential to sustaining our momentum, and I am confident their guidance will propel our universities to new heights.”
The appointments were made public on December 12. Alonzo Cantu will continue his service after first joining the board in 2019. Cantu is recognized for his role in transforming South Texas as chairman and CEO of Cantu Construction. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in finance from the University of Houston.
Bryan F. Clark, a principal at Doeren Mayhew Advisors, LLC, replaces Tammy Murphy and will serve through August 31, 2029. Clark graduated from UH with a Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting and marketing and is an active supporter of university initiatives.
Tommy Lucas will serve a full six-year term ending August 31, 2031. Lucas earned his Doctor of Optometry from UH in 2006 and co-founded VIEW Optometry as well as Elevate Digital Optics. He replaces John McCall.
Lynden B. Rose joins the board with experience as an attorney at HooverSlovacek LLP and community leader in various organizations including the Harris County Houston Sports Authority Board. Rose received both his bachelor’s degree in political science and law degree from UH.
Board Chairman Jack B. Moore stated: “Each of these appointments reflects the spirit, strength and momentum driving the University of Houston System forward. With their added leadership, our Board is energized and ready to build on our progress and continue serving our students and communities at the highest level.”
The UH System Board of Regents oversees three universities within the system: University of Houston, University of Houston-Clear Lake, and University of Houston-Downtown. The board consists of nine regular members appointed for six-year terms by the governor along with one student regent serving a one-year term.
