Congressman Troy E. Nehls (R-TX-22) announced that more than $2.2 million in federal funding has been secured for two projects in Texas’s 22nd Congressional District. The funding includes $1,875,000 allocated for the construction of a community center in Sargent, Texas, intended to serve as a Point of Distribution (POD) following hurricanes or other natural disasters. An additional $346,000 will be used to repair and upgrade the Wharton Dobson Club and Wharton Teen Scene Club in Wharton, Texas.

“I’m proud to announce that through the Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, which President Trump signed into law on November 12, I secured over $2.2 million in federal funding for two of my Community Project Funding requests, which will directly benefit communities in Texas’s 22nd Congressional District,” said Congressman Nehls. “From funds to construct a community center in Sargent, Texas, that will provide critical resources following natural disasters, to much-needed updates to the Wharton Dobson Club and Wharton Teen Scene Club, to provide a safe environment for children to learn and grow, these investments will have lasting positive effects on these communities for years to come.”

Matagorda County Judge Bobby Seiferman expressed gratitude for the efforts: "On behalf of Matagorda County, I want to thank Congressman Nehls and his staff for their continued dedication and efforts to secure federal funding for a Point of Distribution(POD) in Matagorda County. The POD will be a welcome asset resource for emergency management in providing life-sustaining commodities after a disaster.”

Mike Estlinbaum, Matagorda County Commissioner for Precinct 2, commented on recent challenges faced by Sargent: "The community of Sargent, Texas, took the worst of Hurricane Beryl. In the aftermath, the county, state, and local community volunteers did an outstanding job providing and distributing vital recovery items like ice, water, and food. What was found lacking was a location and infrastructure for the operation. The community also lacked a facility to house FEMA personnel so they had to station them 30 miles away. These funds are crucial for ensuring the facilities to ease public suffering in this community following the next disaster. I would like to thank Congressman Nehls and his staff for listening and acting to provide funds for this important project in the community of Sargent."

This grant will provide sustained value to the families and communities of Wharton County through capital improvements that will be made to the Mary Louise Dobson Boys & Girls Club and Teen Scene Boys & Girls Club. According to a recent study every $1 invested in Boys & Girls Clubs returns $12.26 in economic and social benefits realized through increased academic success and caregiver earnings, and improved health and well-being.”

Congressman Nehls has represented Texas's 22nd Congressional District since winning election against Sri Preston Kulkarni with 51.5% of votes in 2020; he won reelection campaigns against Jamie Jordan with 62.2% in 2022 and Marquette Greene-Scott with 62.1% in 2024.
