The University of Houston has reported a record enrollment for the fall 2025 semester, with nearly 49,000 students registered. This marks the highest number in the institution’s history and reflects an increase from last year’s total of 47,980 students.
The growth is attributed to both the largest freshman class ever—6,715 first-time college students—and more than 4,500 transfer students. The university also noted that students are enrolling in more credit hours compared to previous years.
Applications have reached new highs as well. There were over 48,000 applications from prospective freshmen and more than 75,000 total applications across all undergraduate and graduate programs. Freshman applications increased by 12% compared to last year, and early applications for fall 2026 are already tracking nearly 20% higher.
“As the University of Houston approaches its centennial, we are not just growing in size — we are growing in impact. Students are choosing UH because it offers everything they need to succeed: affordability, opportunity and a nationally competitive academic experience right here in Houston, one of the world’s most dynamic cities,” said UH President Renu Khator.
Enrollment growth is particularly strong at UH’s regional campuses. The Katy campus saw nearly 1,000 students this fall—a 73% increase from last year—due to expanded course offerings from several colleges including business and engineering. In Sugar Land, almost 5,000 students are attending classes—the highest number for that location—with access to a new academic building featuring modern labs and technology-focused programs.
Affordability continues to be emphasized by the university. Tuition rates have remained unchanged for several years, making UH one of Texas’ most affordable public research universities. Through its Cougar Promise program, undergraduates from families earning $65,000 or less pay no tuition; those from families earning up to $125,000 receive guaranteed discounts.
On-campus housing demand remains high with facilities at near capacity (97%). A new residence hall with space for an additional 1,000 first-year students is scheduled to open in 2027.
The University of Houston offers a range of academic programs and campus experiences designed to prepare students for future opportunities while maintaining accessibility through financial support initiatives.
