The University of Houston’s Sugar Land Campus has opened a new three-story, 75,000-square-foot engineering building as the fall 2025 semester begins. The facility will serve faculty, staff, students, and programs from the Cullen College of Engineering.

Jay Neal, associate vice president for academic affairs and chief operations officer at UH’s Sugar Land Campus, said, “The opening of the doors to our Sugar Land Academic Building 2 represents the growth our campus has experienced in the last year. This building allows us to accommodate hundreds more students who wish to pursue engineering studies in Fort Bend County.”

A formal grand opening is scheduled for mid-October.

The new building includes wet and dry labs, computer labs, traditional and active learning classrooms, student advising offices, and lounge spaces. It is connected by a sky bridge to Sugar Land Academic Building 1. An art piece titled Split Level by Australian artist Clement Meadmore has been installed on the east side of the building as part of the Public Art University of Houston System collection.

“We have grown with the population of Fort Bend County and always aim to provide academic and industry opportunities that meet the needs of the region,” Neal said.

Since becoming solely part of the University of Houston, enrollment at the campus has reached nearly 5,000 students. The campus also hosts programs from other UH colleges including nursing, education, social work, business, and liberal arts & social sciences.

Funding for this facility was approved by the Texas Legislature in 2021 as part of a broader package supporting construction and renovations across facilities within the UH System.
