The University of Houston’s Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts has announced its 2025-2026 season, which will feature a range of performances, exhibitions, lectures, and community programs. The schedule includes world-premiere operas, visual art exhibitions recognized at the national level, and various events that highlight the work of students, faculty, and visiting artists.
As part of its fall programming, the college will hold its second annual “Sunday in the District” on November 9. This event is free to attend and open to families. It aims to engage the Houston community with live performances, open studios, gallery tours, and interactive arts experiences presented by several schools within the college.
The Moores Opera Center plans to present three productions this season. The first is the world premiere of “Hobson’s Choice” by Tom Cipullo in October. In February, Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” will be performed. April will bring a double bill featuring Carlisle Floyd’s “Slow Dusk” and “Markheim.”
Throughout the year, audiences can attend concerts by faculty and student ensembles from the Moores School of Music. These include performances as part of the Faculty Artist Series and A.I. Lack Master Series as well as concerts by bands, choirs, orchestras, jazz groups, percussion ensembles, mariachi group, and contemporary music ensemble AURA.
The School of Art will host its annual MFA Thesis Show along with a Speaker Series in partnership with the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts and an annual Student Art Show. These programs are designed to showcase student creativity and innovation while allowing audiences to interact directly with emerging visual artists.
Major exhibitions at Blaffer Art Museum this season include “Soledad Salamé: Camouflage,” running from October 18 through March 15; it focuses on environmental resilience through multimedia installations. Another exhibition titled “Mud + Corn + Stone + Blue,” opening January 10 as a traveling show, explores agricultural and cultural ties between the United States and Central America.
The School of Theatre & Dance will present several new works during its 2025-2026 season. The program opens with “Circadian Project,” created in collaboration with PUSH Theatricals; it features an original play devised without words over just over 100 hours of rehearsal time by MFA Acting students and undergraduates.
Other theater offerings include an adaptation called “Anon,” based on Homer’s “The Odyssey”; a production of “Frankenstein”; a dystopian drama titled “The Banded”; an Emerging Choreographers Showcase highlighting student work; adaptations such as “The Relapse”; a performance of "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee"; and the annual "10-Minute New Play Festival." The season ends with "Creative Exchange," which showcases original dance works from faculty members and guest artists.
