The University of Houston is set to commence a significant transformation project as it approaches its 100th anniversary in 2027. The Centennial Construction Project, starting on June 1, 2025, aims to revitalize the historic campus core by creating a more accessible and sustainable environment.

This initiative will focus on enhancing community connectivity and sustainability. It involves modernizing key areas such as University Drive, Centennial Plaza, and Wilhelmina’s Grove. These upgrades are intended to enrich the student experience, promote interdisciplinary collaboration, and affirm the university's role as an innovation and cultural hub in Houston.

The first phase includes closing University Drive west of Martin Luther King Boulevard to vehicular traffic from June 1. This closure will last until 2026, but pedestrian access will be maintained through ADA-compliant pathways. Visitor parking at the Welcome Center Garage remains open with campus shuttles continuing their service.

University Drive will see a redesign featuring a new monument, shaded landscaping, public art installations, outdoor dining options, and a pedestrian-friendly layout leading to Cullen Performance Hall. Centennial Plaza will transform into a vibrant space with elevated outdoor rooms and flexible seating for various activities. Wilhelmina’s Grove in the arts district will gain enhancements like an amphitheater and tree-lined walkways connecting major arts venues.
