At the University of Houston, the focus on student success is expanding beyond mere grades. Scott Radimer, director of assessment and planning for UH Student Affairs, has been instrumental in using data to understand what contributes to student thriving since 2019.

Radimer's work has evolved significantly. Initially part of the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Services, Radimer now collaborates with 23 Student Affairs departments, concentrating more on data analytics and its relationship with student engagement and success.

In 2023, Radimer led the creation of the Division's strategic plan aimed at boosting student success. The plan has already shown positive results in measuring the impact of engagement on student achievement, aligning with the university's goal of becoming a top 50 public institution.

Radimer highlights the value of strategic thinking in helping students succeed, emphasizing the importance of viewing the bigger picture in assessment and planning.

A surprising insight from student feedback involved comments about limited food options after the closure of the Student Center Satellite dining location, which will be reconsidered in light of the new RAD Center.

Radimer is particularly enthusiastic about the Student Employee Competencies program, which evaluates student employees on seven professional competencies. It will be expanded across all departments, with Radimer keen to see its impact on student professional growth.

His advice to UH faculty and staff underscores the importance of prioritizing and acting on data for improved outcomes, warning against the common practice of collecting but not utilizing data effectively.

Outside of his professional duties, Radimer enjoys nature walks, sci-fi literature, and video gaming. He fondly describes UH as "Innovative, Energetic and Inspiring," and encourages participation in Cougar Red Fridays.

"Measure what’s most important, and then make changes based off of what you learn," Radimer advises, underscoring the significance of applied insights for student success.
