Houston Public Media has announced the appointment of Joshua B. Adams as the new associate vice president and general manager effective June 1, 2025. This decision follows a comprehensive national search to fill the role. Adams will oversee the organization's strategic direction and operations across both its broadcast and digital divisions, including KUHT TV8 (PBS) and KUHF News 88.7 (NPR).
Raymond Bartlett, senior vice president for administration and finance at the University of Houston, noted, “During the search process, it became clear that Houston Public Media is not just a local asset — it’s a national leader in public broadcasting. We realized that the best way to build on our strong foundation was with a leader who deeply understands our mission, our community and our momentum. Josh has been instrumental in our digital transformation, and his knowledge of both the market and the team positions him perfectly to lead us into the next chapter.”
Joining Houston Public Media in 2012, Adams brings a wealth of experience with over 25 years in the broadcasting industry. In his previous role as station manager, he managed day-to-day operations, covering news, programming, education, technology, and media strategy. Adams' career also includes roles like the executive director of operations and director of technology and operations.
Adams has contributed significantly to Houston Public Media's evolution, particularly through partnerships with the University of Houston. His efforts in developing technology infrastructure and fostering journalism collaborations such as The Texas Newsroom have been pivotal. Adams has also played a critical role in fundraising and expanding relationships with key stakeholders.
Adams expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Houston Public Media has always been at the forefront of innovation, education, and community service. I’m honored to lead a team so deeply committed to connecting and uplifting the people of Southeast Texas. As we expand our digital footprint and strengthen our partnerships, I see an extraordinary future ahead — one rooted in trust, creativity and a passion for public media that informs, inspires and unites.”
This role transition follows the departure of Lisa Shumate, who has served as general manager since 2011. Shumate will focus on teaching and executive leadership development after stepping down.
