University of Houston increases campus security after recent incidents

The University of Houston has issued an update on safety and security measures following recent incidents on campus. These events, noted for their unusual nature and frequency, have prompted the university to take decisive actions to ensure the safety of its community.

The University of Houston Police Department (UHPD) is actively pursuing all cases in collaboration with Harris County law enforcement agencies and the District Attorney’s office. Charges were filed against an individual initially arrested last Friday in connection with a sexual assault on campus. A new arrest warrant has been issued in this case. "We are aggressively pursuing all cases," stated a university spokesperson.

In addition to addressing the sexual assault case, police are investigating two scooter robberies believed to be related but not connected to the assault. An investigation into a cell phone theft incident from last evening is also underway. UHPD is utilizing video and photo resources and working with local agencies as part of their investigations.

To enhance security, the university has increased patrols across campus, deploying additional security personnel on bikes and carts throughout parking areas and high-traffic zones. The security staff has been expanded, more than doubling the number of officers monitoring campus grounds, buildings, and parking areas since last week.

Efforts are being made to improve visibility by upgrading lighting systems on UHPD bicycles and carts. Additional officers have been stationed at six parking garages, 10 surface lots, as well as bike and scooter racks.
