The University of Houston's Staff Council has once again reached out to the local community through its annual Community Outreach Program. This year, the focus was on spreading holiday cheer by creating handmade cards for senior citizens in the Third Ward area. The initiative aims to support those who may not have family nearby during the festive season.

Courtney Washington, Staff Council Program Manager, played a pivotal role in organizing this event. She emphasized the importance of reaching out to seniors who might feel isolated during the holidays. “Giving back to the community is something we do annually through the Community Outreach Program,” Washington said. “These cards are going to senior citizens who may not have family nearby or who are permanent residents at the facility. For those who don’t have loved ones close by, we want to be their family during the holidays. While this season is joyful for many, it can also be difficult for some. A simple card expressing love and happiness can go a long way.”

Participants from across the Cougar community joined in making these heartfelt cards. Among them was Katie Guidroz from the Conrad N. Hilton College of Global Hospitality Leadership, who expressed her hope that her efforts would bring joy to others: “I’m just hoping to put a smile on someone else’s face,” Guidroz said.

Communications Coordinator Bradi Zapata shared her enthusiasm for the holiday season and participating in such events: “I just really love the holiday season and any reason to celebrate,” Zapata said.

The success of this program is attributed to staff members like Cyndi Romero, whose personal experiences with senior homes underscore her commitment to this cause. “This is a good cause, and I’m especially glad it’s local, benefiting the Third Ward community," Romero noted. "My grandmother was in a senior home for about seven years, and a lot of residents didn't have visitors. I’m happy to see something like this being done because any little thing can brighten your day.”

Through these collective efforts, UH's Staff Council ensures that seniors in Third Ward feel appreciated and cherished during this holiday season.
