University of Houston students, alumni, and guests are set to take part in the "Guarding of the Rings" tradition on Friday, December 6, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Houston Zoo. This event celebrates Cougar spirit and honors UH graduates with the zoo's resident cougars, Shasta VII and his brother Louie, tasked with guarding the rings of the University's newest alumni.

The event will feature a class ring display where rings will be showcased in a UH-themed box within the cougar habitat. This symbolizes the strength and resilience of UH graduates. Attendees can also enjoy a "Cougar Keeper Chat" at 11:30 a.m., providing behind-the-scenes insights into the lives of these animals.

Shasta VII and Louie will be observed as they interact with their habitat while performing their role in this unique tradition that combines university spirit with wildlife majesty.

UH students can attend for free by reserving tickets online using their valid UH ID under the "College Student" discount section on the Houston Zoo website. Non-members must purchase tickets online in advance as no tickets will be available at the gate.

Shasta VII and Louie joined the Houston Zoo in November 2022 after being rescued as orphaned cubs in Washington state. At four weeks old, they were unlikely to survive alone but found a home at the zoo and became emblematic representatives of UH.

This tradition began when Shasta VII and Louie were just 11 weeks old. Today, they continue to represent the strength, spirit, and determination of the Cougar community.
