The University of Houston Athletics has announced the introduction of "Houston Blue" into its uniform selections, a tribute to the City of Houston. This initiative will see teams donning commemorative uniforms on select occasions against in-state rivals.
On November 23, the Houston Football team will debut their new Houston Blue uniforms during Senior Day against Baylor at TDECU Stadium. Fans attending are encouraged to participate in a "Blue Out," with the first 20,000 attendees receiving a commemorative blue rally towel. Similarly, Houston Volleyball will showcase their new jerseys on November 9 in a match against Texas Tech.
Eddie Nuñez, University of Houston Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics, stated, “As a university deeply connected to the fabric of Houston, incorporating ‘Houston Blue’ into our uniforms is a powerful way to celebrate the city’s rich history.” He highlighted that this color resonates with Houstonians due to its association with iconic blue street markers and the signature blue police cars and helicopters of the Houston Police Department.
Merchandise featuring the new color scheme is available both in person and online through various outlets including the University of Houston Campus Store, Academy Sports + Outdoors, DICK’S Sporting Goods, Rally House, and Fanatics. The collection includes replica jerseys, mini helmets, t-shirts, hats, polos, hoodies, and more.
Fans attending the volleyball event on November 9 can also purchase apparel at the venue and receive complimentary blue cheer cards.
The history of "Houston Blue" dates back to the early 1920s when light blue street markers were installed across Houston. The color was later adopted by the Houston Police Department for their vehicles in the 1960s. Additionally, it was used by the city's minor league baseball team, the Houston Buffs.
