Principal Lisa Hernandez of Briarmeadow Charter School has been recognized as this week's HISD Star Educator. Her dedication to enhancing teacher-student engagement through quality instruction and addressing the needs of Special Education students is noted as a significant factor in her recognition.
Hernandez previously served as principal at Mark White Elementary School, beginning in 2016. She describes her first year there as transformative, highlighting the success of differentiated instruction methods for meeting the diverse needs of the student body.
Hernandez's career in education began two decades ago when she worked as a fifth-grade teacher in Austin ISD for ten years before transitioning to a math instructional specialist role. In 2008, she joined HISD, teaching fifth grade at Twain Elementary School and later serving in various roles including instructional specialist, International Baccalaureate coordinator, and assistant principal at The School at St. George Place.
Reflecting on her time with HISD, Hernandez recalls opening a new school and being its founding principal as one of her favorite memories. She appreciates Houston's diversity, describing it as "a vibrant, welcoming city" with a unique blend of traditions and perspectives.
Looking ahead to the upcoming school year, Hernandez aims to refine her coaching and feedback practices to support teachers in becoming highly skilled practitioners, ensuring that every student receives high-quality instruction daily.
